NASCAR officials met with Kurt Busch on Sunday morning at Dover International Speedway and are considering whether to discipline the Sprint Cup driver for his confrontation with Sporting News reporter Bob Pockrass on Saturday.
Busch was being interviewed after a run-in with driver Justin Allgaier after Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Dover when he lashed out at Pockrass.
When asked if his current probation impacted the way Busch raced Allgaier or his reaction after the race, Busch said, “It refrains me from not beating the (expletive) out of you right now because you ask me stupid questions. But since I’m on probation, I suppose that’s improper to say as well.
“If you could talk about racing things, Bob, we can talk about racing things.”
Moments earlier, Busch told a TV reporter that, “I’m on probation so I can’t even pick my nose the right way."
Busch is on probation for a run-in with Ryan Newman and his team May 12 at Darlington Raceway, where Busch angrily sped through Newman’s pit stall, nearly hitting Newman crew members, and for hitting Newman’s car on pit road after the race.
Busch’s comments at Dover on Saturday were captured by Speed and aired on the network's "SpeedCenter" show Saturday evening. The video then became viral.
Busch declined comment when approached by reporters at Dover on Sunday.
“Why would I want to speak with anyone today?” Busch told USA Today. “No comment.”
Busch also declined comment after his meeting with NASCAR.
NASCAR officials confirmed that it met with Busch and is considering disciplinary action. NASCAR typically announces penalties on Tuesday.
Confrontations with the media have cost Busch in the past. Last November, Busch was fined $50,000 in part for cursing at ESPN reporter Jerry Punch during the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. That incident was caught by a fan using a cell phone to videotape it, and the video went viral.
Busch was released by Penske Racing following the season and is now driving for Phoenix Racing in the Sprint Cup Series and his brother's Nationwide team.
