Cowboys Gets Oklahoma TE Hanna in the 6rd
In the sixth round, the Cowboys addressed some needed depth at tight end by drafting Oklahoma's James Hanna at No. 186 overall. A native of nearby Flower Mound, Texas, Hanna caught 45 passes for 673 yards and nine touchdowns in two years starting for the Sooners. He has good speed and agility for his 6-3, 250-pound frame and becomes another potential receiving target for quarterback Tony Romo.
Hanna figures to compete with John Phillips for No. 2 tight end reps behind Jason Witten, and he must contribute on multiple special teams units in order to make the roster this summer. He has watched Witten's career closely while growing up just down the road from Valley Ranch.
"He's my role model," Hannah said. "I've grown up all through football, since I've been playing, a Cowboys fan just watching him and he's been there a long time. He's a great player and I'm really looking forward to getting to learn from him."
The Cowboys have been searching for tight end depth since 2008 second-round pick Martellus Bennett signed with the Giants in March. They hosted free agent Kellen Davis, but he decided to re-sign with the Bears.
Hanna is the eighth tight end taken in this year's draft and the second offensive player drafted by the Cowboys in their first six picks. They went all defense in the first (CB Morris Claiborne), third (DE Tyrone Crawford) and fourth (OLB Kyle Wilber, S Matt Johnson) before grabbing Virginia Tech wide receiver Danny Coale in the fifth.
