Johnson turned a lap of 174.955 mph and was one of two drivers to eclipse the 174-mph barrier on the 1.5-mile oval. Mark Martin was second at 174.317.
Martin’s Michael Waltrip Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. was third, followed by Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin.
Brad Keselowski, Sam Hornish Jr., AJ Allmendinger, Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top 10.
There were no incidents in the final practice.
Kyle Busch led the first practice session Friday at 173.728 mph. Joey Logano blew an engine in the first practice while Kurt Busch wrecked, but suffered only minor damage to his car.
Drivers will have no more practice prior to the STP 400 on Sunday. Qualifying is set 12:10 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
